The Pearl by John Steinbeck.
I choose this Novel because I also have to read it in my Humanities 105 class, thus it is like I shoot 1 time and i'll get 2 ducks ! hehehe This book has so many new vocabulary for me. I have to open my dictionary a lot.
The book is about a poor family that they are fine with how they are and they don't want anything else until the scorpion stung their son, Coyotito. Thus they need doctor, but doctor doesn't come so they have to go to meet doctor by themselves. The doctor is such a bad person. He doesn't help Coyotito at all because Kino and Juanna(Husband & wife) don't have money. Kino is so Angry, but he can't do anything. Then, they have to find something that they can pay to the doctor as money to heal their child. All of them go to the ocean by their boat. Juanna put seaweed on the shoulder of Coyotito and she's singing for Kino. Finally, he found the pearl. The biggest pearl of the world !! That's how the story start.
The story was taking place very long times ago when the medication was low quality and they can used pearl instead of money. By the way, I guess it should be in summer because the story doesn't talk about warm clothes of the weather was cold. Corncake is the only breakfast that they always have for every morning !
Your book’s story sounds like interesting. Poor person got the biggest peal. It sounds like lottery story! However, most of person who won the lottery are filed, because they did know how to use big money. So I worry about next story. I think may be some bad things will happen to them. I hope they will overcome that.
ReplyDeleteI think the story takes place where it has less people live like country or farm. Actually, the country life is very poor both matter and spirit. Furthermore,people who live their have a hard life but full of the happiness of the family. The poor family unit with each other to get over the hard life. On the other hand, people live in the city though they have more money, every things, they don't unit with each other. Hopefully, the poor family could raise their life by finding and selling pearl.
ReplyDeleteI also read the same book as you.I hate the doctor in this book and some of them in our country.It happend with my fam for 4-5 yr ago.My dad get serious sick from the fianl stage of colon cancer.My mom had to pay some extra money under table to the doctor at his clinic.After he gave my dad excellent medicine.This reflect how terrible and poor Thai people' life and how inequtity in Thailand is...so poor
